Villarreal initially embarked on his artistic journey as an actor. His talent was recognized with a nomination for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship, leading to a successful stint in commercials. However, driven by a profound passion for storytelling, Villarreal transitioned to pursue directing.

His impactful work challenges stereotypes and champions diversity, exemplified by the success of his short film, LA BRUJA, which won the Tomorrow's Filmmakers Today Audience Award at the Hola Mexico Film Festival. It’s set to premiere at the Latino American Film Festival (LALIFF) at the end of June. Villarreal’s films have also been featured at the Outfest Fusion Film Festival and NewFilmmakers Los Angeles.

In 2024, Villarreal was selected as one of only four filmmakers to participate in the mitú x Walmart Filmmaking Mentorship Program, where he received a $50,000 grant to produce a short film. Additionally, his remarkable talent secured him a spot in the prestigious Film Independent Project Involve '24 Directing Fellowship.

Holding an MFA in Directing from the AFI Conservatory, Villarreal is deeply committed to challenging societal preconceptions and highlighting the rich diversity of Latinos across the United States through his cinematic endeavors.
